Book Review: Songs in Ordinary Time

To celebrate the fact that I reached my goal of reading 50 books this year--with a month to spare (!), I read a really BIG book. Songs in Ordinary Time, by Mary McGarry Morris, is 700+ pages. It's a family saga set in 1960 in the small town of Atkinson, Vermont. The book details the everday life of the Fermoyle family. Struggles, decisions, yearnings, failures, successes. Taken separately, many of the happenings are "ordinary", taken as a whole the book is a powerful and dramatic story of life and perseverance. My favorite author is John Steinbeck and this book reminds me of his style of finding the profound in the sublime.
